Julie Ozier, MHL, CIP, CIM, CCRC

Clinical Faculty
Assistant Director, Institutional Review Board, Vanderbilt University

After 12 years of direct patient care and clinical research in Ophthalmology, Julie began her full-time career as a clinical research manager in 2001. Before joining the Vanderbilt Institutional Review Board (IRB), she served as a Clinical Trials Specialist for the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center's Affiliate Network where she was responsible for regulatory affairs, such as IND filing and reporting, and IBC and IRB applications. Since joining the IRB in 2002 as a Protocol Analyst, she has assumed increasing responsibilities in IRB education and compliance by serving as the IRB Compliance Officer and, in her current role as Assistant Director of the IRB. She holds a Master's Degree in Health Law and has achieved Certified IRB Professional status through PRIM&R, Certified IRB Manager status through the National Association of IRB Managers, and Certified Clinical Research Coordinator status through the Association of Clinical Research Professionals. Her primary areas of interest are in the Responsible Research Conduct, Human Research Protections and Institutional Regulatory Compliance.

Bonita Ann Pilon, DSN, RN, BC, FAAN

Senior Associate Dean for Practice
Professor of Nursing, Health Systems Management

Dr. Pilon is Professor and Senior Associate Dean for Practice at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, and directs the Health Systems Management academic program. She has held the Associate Dean position since 1999. Prior to that time she was an assistant professor and associate professor in the health systems management graduate program at Vanderbilt. She has held a number of leadership positions in healthcare, including Chief Nursing Officer for a 500 bed tertiary hospital, Senior Consultant for IBM, and Manager in a proprietary healthcare company. She holds a Bachelor of Science from Barry University (Miami, Florida), a Master in Nursing from the University of Florida (Gainesville, Florida) and a Doctor of Science in Nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Pilon has served as Chair of the National Nursing Centers Consortium and as Chair of the Case Management Administrators Credentialing Board. She is active in state and national professional organizations. She has conducted research in nursing administration and health systems management, authored numerous publications, and serves as a national and international consultant in case management and nursing administration.

Amy D. Rock, PhD, MBA

Clinical Instructor, Clinical Research Management

Dr. Rock received her BA in Economics from Washington University, PhD in Immunology from the University of Kentucky, and MBA from Vanderbilt University. She is currently working at Cumberland Pharmaceuticals Inc. and has played a pivotal role in building the Regulatory Affairs Department and its infrastructure. Dr. Rock oversees the entire preparation of pre- and post-approval regulatory submissions, from outlining general strategy to reviewing individual documents. Dr. Rock also serves on the company's corporate compliance committee.

Denise A. Roe, MSM, BA, LPN, CCRP, CIP

Director, Institutional Review Board, Vanderbilt University

After 16 years in direct patient care delivery as a Licensed Practical Nurse, Denise began a career dedicated to research administration and oversight in 1998. In 2001, after three years of managing multi-center research throughout the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center's Affiliate Network, Denise joined the Institutional Review Board at Vanderbilt University. In 2002 she accepted a leadership role within the IRB and led the initiative for the accreditation of Vanderbilt's human research protections program by the Association for Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP®). Denise serves as a faculty member for the Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R) Association, which is dedicated to creating, implementing, and advancing the highest ethical standards in the conduct of research. She achieved Certified IRB Professional status through PRIM&R in 2002. She has also achieved certified clinical research professional (CCRP) status from the Society of Clinical Research Associates (SoCRA). Denise's passion is the education and application of the federal regulations and ethical principles that guide research to promote the utmost protection of research participant's rights, safety, and welfare.

Kyle Rybczyk, MSN, APRN, BC

Clinical Instructor

Kyle is a Family Nurse Practitioner and the Director of the Vanderbilt HIV Vaccine Trials Unit at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Prior to assuming directorship of the program in 2001, he served for nine years as a Clinical Research Coordinator for the HIV Vaccine Trial Unit. His current responsibilities include oversight of the day to day activities of the clinical trials unit, supervision of the unit's clinical, recruitment, and educational outreach staff, management of multiple government and industry-sponsored studies, and oversight of all clinical, regulatory, and administrative activities. He has been a member of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center Institutional Review Board since 1998 and currently serves as chairman of the Health Sciences committee. He holds a faculty appointment as an Associate in Pediatrics in the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. His research interests include social implications of trial participation, the involvement of adolescents in clinical trials, and mucosal immune responses to vaccines. He received his MSN from Vanderbilt University School of Nursing.

Lois Wagner, PhD, APN, BC

Program Director, Clinical Research Management
Assistant Professor of Nursing, Clinical Research Management
Associate Director for Research, Tennessee Center for Nursing

Dr. Wagner is an Assistant Professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing and is the Director of the Clinical Research Management Program. She has over 18 years of experience in coordinating, managing and conducting clinical research trials. Her clinical trials experience includes managing vaccine and drug trials sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and major pharmaceutical companies. She has designed, coordinated and conducted clinical research educational programs in United States, the Caribbean and in South America, and has coordinated on-line training programs on research ethics. Her own research involves cognitive-behavioral interventions to improve psychobiological outcomes and quality of life in chronic illness. She also serves as the Associate Director for Research for the Tennessee Center for Nursing which conducts and supports research focused on nursing workforce development. Her previous research has focused on cognitive-behavioral interventions to improve psychobiological outcomes in persons with HIV infection and other chronic conditions.

Kelly Willenberg, PhD candidate, MBA, BSN


Kelly holds a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and a Masters in Business Administration and is a PhD candidate. She has worked at Vanderbilt University Medical Center for the last ten years in clinical trials research, mostly in management at the Vanderbilt Ingram Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is currently the Director of Clinical Research Financial Compliance for the Department of Finance, serving as the Research Financial Compliance Billing Director for the medical center. Prior to Vanderbilt, she worked in numerous roles in clinical trials research including protocol coordinator, contract negotiator and data manager. She has over 18 years of experience working in the management of clinical trials for both adults and pediatrics and has done seminars and presentations in clinical trials management, budgeting, and billing for Oncology Nursing Society, Academy of Health Care Administrators, ASCO, American Health Lawyers Association, Health Care Compliance Association and other professional organizations. She has also done numerous presentations at International Twin Congresses in England and Finland as she is a mother of adult twin daughters. She is also a clinical faculty member of the Vanderbilt School of Nursing where she teaches on concepts in clinical research.

Debra Wujcik, PhD, RN, AOCN


Dr. Wujcik is Director of Clinical Trials Training and Outreach at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. Her current position involves project management for the cancer clinical trials collaboration between Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and Meharry Medical College and she directs the clinical trials staff at Nashville General Hospital at Meharry. In addition she is an Associate Professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing. Dr. Wujcik is a frequent lecturer on many aspects of clinical trials, targeted therapies, and symptom management. She has multiple publications in clinical areas of expertise including hematologic malignancies, symptom management and cancer clinical trials. Dr. Wujcik's research interests are barriers to completion of cancer screening and clinical trial participation.
